There are weddings that are beautiful. And then there are weddings that feel like they were written by the city itself.
Abby and Alli's wedding day was the second kind.
If you live in Seattle, there's a good chance you've started your morning with Abby Acone ( Emmy Award-winning meteorologist and anchor at FOX 13 Seattle) the woman who tells this city what kind of day it's going to be. What you might not know is that on one very specific day this year, Abby wasn't forecasting the weather. She was standing at the top of one of Seattle's most iconic landmarks, seeing her person for the very first time in a wedding dress.
And the forecast? Perfect. In every way that matters.
The First Look at Smith Tower
Smith Tower has stood at the corner of Second and Yesler since 1914. For over a century it has watched this city change, grow, and become what it is. And on Abby and Alli's wedding day, it held something new: a first look that stopped time.
There is something about a first look that I will never get tired of photographing. The anticipation. The breath held. The moment one person turns and sees the other, and every carefully practiced expression gives way to something completely unscripted. At Smith Tower, with Seattle spread out below them and the sky wide open above, that moment was extraordinary.
Abby turned. Alli saw her. And the city witnessed it.
Bell Harbor — A Ceremony on the Water
From Smith Tower, we moved to Bell Harbor International Conference Center on the Seattle waterfront for the ceremony.
The ceremony was intimate and full of meaning. These are two women who chose each other deliberately and publicly, in a city that has been a beacon for the LGBTQ+ community for decades. There was joy in the room that felt earned , the particular kind of joy that comes when love that has been private finally gets to be seen by everyone.
I am a photographer who believes that love looks the same through a lens regardless of who is holding whose hand. And I also believe that visibility matters , that when a couple like Abby and Alli stands in front of their community and says "this is us, and we are not hiding," something important happens in that room. I was honored to be there to document it.
